Once it became apparent that German military ambitions in the west were to be thwarted by British resistance and Hitler's attention turned to the greater goal of the defeat of Stalin's Russia, the need to shore up the defense of Europe against any possible attack from the British Isles became imperative. Although earlier phases of the war had proved the ineffectiveness of fixed defensive lines - most notably in the failure of the French Maginot Line - the concept of an Atlantic Wall was central to German defensive plans in the west. Stretching along the Atlantic and Channel coasts, a complex network of fortifications was constructed, a network that was to have a dramatic impact on the Allied strategic planning for D-Day in June 1944.

Although the Atlantic Wall was to fail its ultimate test, along certain sections of the coast the German defenses were able to impose massive casualties on the invasion force; if the German support forces had been able to reach the Allied beach-head more rapidly, the history of the war might have been fundamentally different.

The scale of the Atlantic Wall is evident even today, more than 50 years after the end of the war, through the vast bunkers and gun emplacements that still stand sentinel on the coast of Europe.

George Forty, one of Britain's foremost military historians, provides a detailed account of the construction, manning and defense of the Atlantic Wall in that crucial period before and during the Allied invasion in June 1944. Drawing upon archives both in Britain and in Germany, he provides a fascinating insight into the nature of the Atlantic Wall from the standpoint of those who were tasked with manning it. Comprehensively illustratedthroughout with a remarkable selection of contemporary photographs and line drawings, the book is one of the first to accord the Atlantic Wall the importance it merits.

Implementing Service Quality in IP Networks by Vilho Raisanen, ISBN 047084793X

Why implement service quality? Is it possible to ensure reliable service quality in multi-service IP networks? Which technologies help in making end-to-end quality of service a realistic business proposition?

In "Implementing Service Quality in IP Networks," Vilho Risnen answers these questions and more. The author discusses the business drivers for multi-service IP networks from various different angles. He defines service quality, explains how to estimate and measure the end-user experience and discusses different ways of conveying service quality requirements to the network.

Turning theory into practice, he uses Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as a framework for discussing inter-domain management and measurement of multi-service IP networks. Bandwidth broker assisted signalling is presented as an evolutionary step towards dynamic SLAs. Finally, a case study describing service quality support in an IP-based Radio Access Network (RAN) illustrates the techniques introduced in the book.

Precoding and Signal Shaping for Digital Transmission by Robert F. Fischer, ISBN 0471224103

A comprehensive, hands-on resource for today’ s telecommunications industry

As the amount of data being transmitted over our communications networks continues to increase, the dispersive nature of the channels it travels through, be they copper, fiber-optic, or wireless, is becoming ever more important in determining the quality of the signal. Because the use of precoding and signal shaping techniques can significantly enhance signal quality, these techniques already play a key role in wireline communications standards and are now being developed for wireless applications. The implementation of precoding and signal shaping algorithms in today’ s telecommunications allows a more efficient use of bandwidth, which means that a given network can support a greater amount of data or number of users without needing to be updated.

Filling the need for a comprehensive, practically oriented introduction to the subject, Precoding and Signal Shaping for Digital Transmission will be of...

Competition in the 21st Century by Kirk W. M. Tyson, ISBN 1574440322

Ten years in the making, this book paints competition of the future based on in-depth research of worldwide business over the past 100 years. By analogy, it shows business competition in its 19th century childhood, 20th century adolescence, and 21st century adulthood. The book highlights new beginnings - the Intelligence Age, highly networked "MegaStrategic Business Entities", and the need for both a "Competitive Knowledge Base" and "Perpetual Strategy Process" to provide an early warning system...
