Derderian looks at the large North African population in France and their attempts for recognition in a country which has long denied its rich immigration past and present. He considers how the North African community has developed from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, especially in their political and cultural initiatives. Derderian examines the radio station "Radio Beur" and the television show "La Famille Ramdam," as well as political initiatives and the role of ethnic minorities in defining prominent French sites of memory such as the working-class suburbs or banlieues and the Algerian War. Based largely on oral history, Derderian draws from a wealth of interviews with North African artists and creators as well as various French cultural actors.
Transatlantic Dialogue: Contemporary Art in and Out of Africa by Michael D. Harris, ISBN 029597933X
Transatlantic Dialogue opens an exciting cultural dialogue at the crossroads where Western and African art traditions intersect. Despite diversity, of media, technique, and form, these contemporary African and African American art works and the artists who created them are united by a rich network of connections, exchanges, and associations generated from both shores of the Middle Passage.
Collected in this book are 24 color reproductions of the art of seven African artists: Skunder Boghossian, Sokari Douglas Camp, Rashid Diab, Amir Nour, Moyo Ogundipe, Moyo Okediji, and Ouattara -- and seven African American artists: Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Biggers, Jeff Donaldson, Yvonne Edwards-Tucker, Winnie Owens-Hart, Charles Searles, and Al Smith. Paintings, mixed media, sculptures, and ceramics reflect issues of identity while expressing beauty, pulsating rhythms, and a sense of improvisation among bursts of color and quiter, more contemplative moments.

Precoding and Signal Shaping for Digital Transmission by Robert F. Fischer, ISBN 0471224103
A comprehensive, hands-on resource for today s telecommunications industry
As the amount of data being transmitted over our communications networks continues to increase, the dispersive nature of the channels it travels through, be they copper, fiber-optic, or wireless, is becoming ever more important in determining the quality of the signal. Because the use of precoding and signal shaping techniques can significantly enhance signal quality, these techniques already play a key role in wireline communications standards and are now being developed for wireless applications. The implementation of precoding and signal shaping algorithms in today s telecommunications allows a more efficient use of bandwidth, which means that a given network can support a greater amount of data or number of users without needing to be updated.
Filling the need for a comprehensive, practically oriented introduction to the subject, Precoding and Signal Shaping for Digital Transmission will be of...
